Laura was inspired to create WWISH because of the personal adversity she overcame in her own life. For years, Laura lived in an abusive marriage. With very little education and no earning power, she was afraid to go out on her own. In 1996, Laura found the courage to leave her husband, taking her two small children with her. But in doing so, she lost her home and her car and had very little money. In order to support herself and her children, she initially had to use the welfare system. She then worked waiting tables, cleaning houses, teaching fitness, and as a caregiver for an elderly woman. With no means to obtain legal counsel, Laura did her own research, learned what her legal rights were and educated herself on how to start divorce proceedings. In 1997, Laura became ill with severe clinical depression. Through medication and intense therapy her illness became manageable and she eventually recovered. With her recovery, she gained self-esteem and determination to change her life.
Laura wasn’t an excellent student in high school, but as an adult, she had a strong desire to learn. In 2001, at the age of 42, she enrolled in Wenatchee Valley College. Laura was determined to change her past pattern of failure in academics. While attending college she founded and served as Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper. Because of her grades and her achievements, she was awarded a full scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, which enabled her to attend the University of Washington in 2004. She made the Dean’s list and graduated with a BA in Journalism in 2006.
